Tiffany dome restoration

They restored the Tiffany glass dome at the Chicago Cultural Center recently, so when I had an hour to kill downtown today I made sure I went to see it. It's absolutely stunning.

Here is what it looked like before:

Here is what it looks like now:
Tiffany Dome restoration: Amazing.

Tiffany Dome restoration: Glorious.

The details are astonishing. Look at the pinks and greens! The woodwork!
Tiffany Dome restoration: Details. Wow.

Tiffany Dome restoration: The frames were restored, too.

They removed the copper outer dome, too, so the light coming through is natural now. And what a light it is!

Amazing. I hope they do the other one too!

  1. Awesome! I'll be sure to check it out; it's been a while since I've been back in there.

  2. It's definitely worth a trip. It was cloudy and rainy when I was there today, so the light was actually muted. I want to go back on a sunny day!

  3. It used to be covered and lit artificially. Did they remove the metal cover?

  4. They sure did! Amusingly, in the articles about it, they said that they couldn't find the actual reason why the copper domes were added in the first place.

  5. "It was during the Depression, so maybe somebody knew somebody who needed work." Ha ha ha! Typical Chicago style. I bet the Mayor had something to do with it. :)

  6. Glorious!

  7. Beautiful pictures, as always! The Cultural Center should hire you for all of their print work & driving people in to see it!!!
